2 Tips to Recognize Real Factories on Alibaba

The Reality of China's Supply Chain

You need to understand how Chinese supply chain operates. A single product might be manufactured by one factory but sold through 5, 10, or even 20 different trading companies. Sometimes, the factory itself sells under various company names. Multiple 'factories' are actually selling products from the same real factory.

Finding a real factory on Alibaba is harder than most people think because many merchants are trading companies or mixed supply chains. You must focus on verification signals: business licenses, production videos, and continuous specialization. On Alibaba, what you should focus most is reliability and resource integration, not just the absolute lowest price.

Over the past two months, I contacted approximately 30 suppliers. Every single one claimed to be a factory. Half of them provided a quote within minutes—I now know these are middlemen simply adding a markup to someone else's price. A few agreed to video calls, but either canceled or showed me locations that were clearly 'borrowed'. One even sent a business license that didn't match their Alibaba company name.

The ones that might actually be real factories either had Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) I couldn't meet yet, or stopped replying after the second email. Once you conduct actual due diligence rather than just looking at platform badges, the auditing time drops from nearly 8 weeks to about 2 weeks. It is worth calculating the time cost before giving up.[2]

Verification is more important than labels. Buyers must verify business licenses, production proof, and communication quality. Both models (factories and traders) are workable, but both require strict due diligence.

2 Professional Tips to Filter Suppliers

Tip 1: Decode the Alibaba Company Type
& Business License

Suppliers can choose the 'Custom Manufacturer' tag if they are a factory or an Industrial & Trading Co., Ltd (工贸一体). Therefore, not all 'Custom Manufacturer' tags guarantee a pure factory. Furthermore, 'Multispecialty suppliers' are almost always trading companies[1].

If they are Golden Suppliers, they will be marked as 'Verified', meaning Alibaba's SGS team has physically checked their company and factory.

Actionable Step: Check their Supplier Assessments to find their official Chinese Company Name and Registered Address. Search this address on Baidu Maps (map.baidu.com) or Gaode Map. Do not use Google Maps, as most domestic Chinese locations won't display accurately.

Name Check: If the Chinese company name includes '贸易有限责任公司' (Trading Co., Ltd), they are mostly trading not factory.

Location Check: If the company address is located in a 'Creative Park' (创意园) or commercial office building, it is likely just a sales office, not a manufacturing plant.

Tip 2: The Real On-Site Inspection Video

Most importantly, check for the real Alibaba On-site Inspection video. Please do not rely on the promotional video shown on the supplier's homepage—that can be highly customized and misleading.

Actionable Step: Go to 'Company Profile' -> 'Company Overview'. For Verified suppliers, SGS makes the video themselves. (Note: Company images can still be submitted by the supplier, so always focus on the SGS video).

Video Label Red Flags: If the video is labeled Suppliers associate company, or Suppliers affiliate company, or Suppliers Partner they are trading companies or Industrial & Trading hybrids.
Suppliers affiliate company
Suppliers partner company
Marked 'Suppliers company
Green Flags: For a real factory, the video will be marked 'Suppliers company', or no specific relationship marking. Factory that equipment will materials preparing area and CNC or laser cutting machine will be the real production factory.
No specific relationship marking
Marked 'Suppliers company'
If there is no video, check the Overview images. Are there photos of active production lines, cutting machines, or CNC machines? Does the Chinese name on the factory gate match the license? This could indicate a hybrid company.

Case Studies: Verifying the Source

To demonstrate how this due diligence works, here is the exact data breakdown of two real suppliers.

Case A: The Verified Manufacturing Factory
Statement: This supplier possesses PU molded slow-rebound memory foam is a genuine factory.
Target Company: 广州市林森实业有限公司 (Guangzhou Linsen Industrial Co., Ltd.)
Alibaba URL: https://gzlinsen.en.alibaba.com/index.html spm=a2700.shop_cp.88.10.5e8a3c263Bo1zY[3]
Credit Code: 914401145818812204
Date of Issue: 2011-09-08
Company Address: 13-001, Changtang Road, Zhongbei Area, Shegang Village, Tanbu Town, Huadu Dist. Guangzhou Guangdong China

Evidence & Data Verification
1. Baidu Map Street View: The mapped address confirms it is an independent industrial factory building. [4]
2. Domestic Hiring Data (Boss Zhipin): The company is actively hiring front-line production staff ('Sewing workers', 6-11K RMB/month, 3-5 years experience in Guangzhou).[5]
3. Government Environmental Protection Records: The Guangzhou Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau issued an 'Environmental Impact Report Approval' for their construction project, stating their manufacturing must comply with pollution controls.[6]

Analysis
Trading companies do not hire piece-rate sewing workers, nor do they apply for complex industrial environmental impact approvals. Through this cross-referencing, we can confidently determine this is a real manufacturing factory. (Note: A physical site visit is still required for final validation).
Case B: The Assembly Factory (Industrial & Trading)
Statement: This company operates as an assembly plant rather than a raw-materials manufacturer, and assembly with Ozone Generator.
Target Company: 广州飞歌环保科技有限公司 (Flygoo Eco-Technologies (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd.)
Alibaba URL: https://ozonegenerator.en.alibaba.com/company_profile.html [7]
Registration No.: 91440111331364124P
Date of Issue: 2015-02-11
Registered Address: Room Ca102, 15 Yagang Shijiao Street, Shimen Street, Baiyun District Guangzhou Guangdong China
Evidence & Data Verification:
Baidu Map Street View: The map shows the facility is indeed an industrial building, not a standard office in a commercial tower.[8]
Analysis: Based on the address details (Room Ca102) and visual footprint, this is an assembly factory. They likely do not have their own sheet-metal or tooling workshops, but instead source parts and assemble the final ozone generators. For many buyers, assembly factories offer an excellent balance of quality control and communication.
Conclusion
By utilizing these two primary tips—cross-referencing business licenses and verifying official SGS videos—you can accurately identify real Alibaba factories and bypass disguised trading companies. However, all internet information serves only as a reference. You will still need a trusted person or agent for real-site checking to finalize your supply chain.
